Kokomo Beach

We traveled up and down the western coast of Curaçao exploring the islands glorious beaches. Kokomo was hands down our favorite. With a floating dock, overwater swings, sea glass galore and a super chill vibe. Kokomo is a must do while visiting Curaçao.

Getting There

An easy twenty minute drive north west from the capital of Willemstad, Kokomo Beach is centrally located on the island. We had no issues locating the beach on the road named Wag Naar Bullenbaai using Google Maps.  There are also signs pointing you in the right direction at frequent intervals. Right before you get to the beach, look out for a large shallow salt lake on the left hand side of the road. If you’re lucky you might spot some roaming flamingos! Once you arrive, there is a large dirt parking lot at the beach with plenty of free parking.

Pro Tip: Download the free maps.me app before you go if you don’t want to use data while on the road. This is an app that provides free offline maps of the island. We used this while traveling around and found that it did a very good job of getting us to our destination.

Things to do

Our original plan for the day was was to check out Kokomo then head north and check out some more scenery along the coast. Once we arrived, we were unable to tear ourselves away from this gorgeous location. Some of our favorite things about this beach:

Dock

There was a long beautiful dock extending out into the water. The beaches of Curaçao tend to be a little rocky as you enter the water before smoothing out to pure white sand. The dock allowed us to get in and out of the sea easily without water shoes. This is beautiful spot to snap some family photos!

Floating Swim Platform

My kids loved swimming out to the floating platform beyond the dock. This is a great place to lay in the sun, listening to the waves all around you. The kids brought out their snorkels and spotted some colorful fish swimming around the platform anchor. If you head out, make sure you either have the upper body strength to hoist yourself up out of the water or a helper. There’s no ladder!

Sea Glass Paradise

This beach is a sea glass hunter’s paradise. My kids found more than a hundred pieces with minimal searching. At one point, my daughter found a rocky area of the beach, sat down and realized that each wave that hit the shore around her brought new sea glass pieces to snatch up. It was hard to move her from that spot! We also found that if you put on a mask and snorkel and search in the rocky area of the shore underwater just before the waves break, you will be rewarded with sea glass prizes galore.

Beach Bar & Restaurant

Take a break from the sand and have a drink or lunch at the on-site open air restaurant. Don’t worry, with plenty of outdoor seating you won’t have to tear yourself away from the turquoise blue water or the Caribbean breeze. If you want to keep your tootsies in the sand, the beach bar offers a snack menu. They even deliver your food right to your beach chair.  We ate probably the most delicious chicken nuggets I’ve ever eaten. Added bonus, fruity drinks and cold beer are only a few steps away!

Chairs & Shade

Beach Chairs and Umbrellas – There was a great selection of beach chairs and beds in both the sun and shade. Early in the afternoon we were approached by a beach attendant collecting payment for using the chairs with the cost being $6.00 per chair. This is very typical for Curaçao so don’t be surprised! Chairs did seem to fill up late in the morning so arrive early for the best seats.

The Verdict?

Kokomo beach was was hands down our favorite beach on the island.  Although every beach has its charm, the international crowd of families and couples makes Kokomo’s vibe friendly and relaxed. The snorkeling, the amenities and the amazing water made this our top pick on the island. If you plan to spend any time on Curaçao, make sure you visit!
